They both were new on that situation, they both were very scared. The boy tried to convince his girl telling that everything will be OK, though he himself was not sure of that and he couldn't watch her suffering.
The girl was crying because of extreme pain. Boy was not able to think straight, he was also panicking. Everything will be alright just hold on he repeated his word to the girl again and got out of room.
